"Good idea, wrong gulf.  The Gulf of California is much closer and the Sulton Sea is just miles inland.  The "New" river already flows just about all the way.  Evaporation rate is wild.  Chuck Dohogne"

"We down here in Australia are perennially arguing about building a canal/pipeline from the top of the Spencer Gulf in South Australia about 280 km north to Lake Eyre. At the moment Lake Eyre IS A SEA.( see Cyclone Yasi ) It is about 10m (30ft) below…"

Want to generate electricity AND give the south west states "fresh water"? Build a canal from the gulf of Mexico to Death Valley. It will need to be the correct depth to take advantage of the tides coming in and out. Along many MILES of this canal, place water generated power plants along the way.
