Simpleware case study: reconstructing hyaenodon fossil from micro-CT

Our 3D image processing and mesh generation software has been used in Japan to reconstruct a hyaenodon fossil from a micro-CT scan. The fossil of the prehistoric hyaenodon mammal, representing a partial jaw and teeth, was discovered in Mongolia and scanned using micro-CT. The data was then imported to Simpleware ScanIP, where it was visualised, segmented and smoothed.

A watertight STL file was then generated and exported for 3D printing, taking advantage of the software's ability to handle multiple parts without errors. The 3D printed model was scaled up and created in two sections so observers could see how the jaw and teeth fit together.
