Injection Molding Design Validation with DFMPro on Solidworks - Tutorial

What is DFMPro?

DFMPro is an easy-to-use design for manufacturability (DFM) tool for designers and manufacturing engineers that is seamlessly integrated into leading CAD platforms like SolidWorks® and Pro/ENGINEER®. It facilitates upstream manufacturability validation and identification of areas of a design that are difficult, expensive or impossible to manufacture.

DFMPro has three modules - Injection Molding, Sheet Metal and Machining.

I am just covering the first part of Injection Molding module.

The Injection Molding Part Analysis

The first step is to open Solidworks and open file to load this sample Injection Molding part.


DFMPro is tightly integrated into Solidworks. To start analyzing this part, run DFMpro from Solidworks Menu.

Go to part type and select "Injection Molding". DFMPro can analyze parts like Injection Molding, Sheet Metal and Machined parts like Dilling, Milling and Turning features.

Click on "Run" button to, DFMPro will start analyzing the part. DFMPro has Gometric's patented Feature Recognition engine. It analyzes the in depth part geometry and does not depend just on native CAD model.

DFMPro has it's unique rule based engine which is easy to configure and work with. These are simple checks which are inherient part of Injection Molding part design process.

Clicking on failed rule displays failure incidence, Reason for failure and settings for defined rule. In the selected incidence it shows rule failure because of DRAFT Angle.

"The draft angle for the cavity is 0 degrees. Where recommended is more than equal to 5 degrees"


In the next highlighted incidence the Mold wall thickness thickness is 1.72 mm which is 0.57 times nominal wall thickness of 3 mm and recommend thickness is twice the

nominal wall thickness i.e. 6 mm. This way DFMPro can display each incidence and pin point to geometry where part is likely to fail.

Undercut Detection : This incidence shows the undercut detected and reason for failure.

These failure incidence in DFPro can also be analyzed based on category and based on criticality. The criticality could be 'Hih', 'Medium' and 'Low' depending on organization requirements.

For instance the Draft angle rule may not be 'High' critical it could be 'Medium'. Also if required rule can be ignored if not important and results can be filtered out. So that design

engineer can focus on only critical and important rules for organization. These rules can be easily Ignored and added with just right clicking the rule.

Rules sorted by criticality. 'High', 'medium' and 'Passe' and 'Applicable'. Passed rules are the one where the rule has passed i.e. it is between the defined parameter.

Another interesting features of DFMPro is that such rules files can be saved. So depending on Part, Process, Design, Material etc. rule file can be created. I.e. rules can be completely

customized based on user and organizations requirement.

Filtering Ignored rules

DFMPro Reporting:

DFMPro also generates custom reports. There are three types of report DFMPro can generate. To generate report click on 'Generate Report' button.

Following tab will be displayed about selecting type of report. Select XML, EXCEL or eDrawings report.

1) eDrawigs report allows file to be saved in eDrawings professional format. The original model is saved in a compact format and users can collaborate easily by sharing feedback.

Users can comment and saved files can be easily mailed across for sharing.

2) XML files - It opens with any browser and can be easily shared with any user. To display how it looks I have added results to Word file and stored it for display

2) MS Excel - The report can also be generated in Ms Excel format. This excel file contains details related to failure incidence, reasons.

All the reports are in Image and Text format explaining in details of failure description of each failure with Image and text and parameters for the said rule.

DFMPro allows complete customization of Rule file and use of rules. I will describe the DFMPro rules customization in in next blog.

I bought the SolidWorks 2011 book which covers beginner to advanced topics, and is very comprehensive. I often use the book as a reference to go through.
