I came across a scan I had of a robot design / concept from what I imagined was from the 50's - and figured it was a joke of sorts, or wacky concept. The engineers even ensured that the robot had a bellows apparatus so the humanoid robot could smoke - a sure sign of the times.

It turns out a few of these were actually produced and Westinghouse thought this could be the ultimate appliance. Apparently Westinghouse created eight robots between 1931 to 1940, Elektro is the only survivor. The robots cost several hundred thousand dollars each to build, but the R&D was going to be the future of alleviating mundane tasks for the working Joe. And I was off by a decade or so on the technology. Fascinating to see how far we've come. Now where is my ASIMO to share a smoke and drink with?
