Adopt 3D CAD in the Product Design Process to Improve Productivity

Bringing an innovative product to the market involves multiple steps, and the first step is to bring conceptual idea to 3D model, which is usually developed through CAD tools. The use of 3D CAD modeling is increasing exponentially within engineers and innovators looking to develop new product. Right from visualization and exploring new design ideas to performing virtual tests on the product design, 3D models are an integral part of the product development process.

The 3D environment saves both time and resources for entrepreneurs as there are multiple uses of the 3D CAD model of the product. These models can now be even used to develop prototypes using cost-effective 3D printing techniques, and as such having a product design in 3D is increasingly becoming necessary across each and every product development stage.

The Rise of 3D Design

The demand for 3D digital design is rising, partly because entrepreneurs need to improve the communication regarding their innovative product with investors. Digital design allows stakeholders to understand the product concept clearly and easily provide feedback for improvement in the design. Further with 3D model in hand, the entire supply chain can seamlessly communicate with each other, be the requirement is for part supplying, product development or development of marketing materials and customer demos.

Moreover, a conceptual design can only be finalized when it is validated for strength, performance and manufacturing feasibility. Without testing, the design is nothing more than a theoretical assumption. 3D digital design as such is not to replace physical prototyping but to add another layer of virtual testing using techniques like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or Finite Element Analysis (FEA), so that physical trials can be minimized. The same 3D data is required for virtual testing and for physical prototyping. Moreover, the 3D data can then be directly exported to CNC machines or 3D printers in their specific formats.

While physical prototypes are essential, these can be utilized in conjunction with 3D digital mockups to validate the product’s form, fit and functionality along with physical and chemical properties. This type of workflow will ensure that design iterations are minimal and product design reaches to manufacturing ready state faster. Globally, manufacturers have started adopting standard practices that require digital design files for production. Thus, adopting digital designs can help in eliminating errors, improves productivity and helps you to establish better in the market. There is also an increased adoption of design automation using digital design data, which further shrinks the product development time for configurable products or engineer-to-order products.

Commercializing Your Product

Although the prime purpose of using 3D digital design is to improve manufacturing efficiency, the same designs are also used by marketing teams by generating renderings and packaging designs to demonstrate investors and customers. 3D design actually expedites the marketing phase by reducing the development time and bringing the product to market sooner.

Starting your product idea with 3D models will help you in reducing complexities that can occur at later stages of the development cycle. The benefits of 3D CAD are not only restricted to design phase, as a matter of fact, the actual benefits are experienced during prototyping, manufacturing and marketing stages.
