Various 3D printer and additive manufacturing systems are already manufacturing parts, just not in the quantity that is possible. What’s holding back this technology’s potential to “disrupt manufacturing?” Designers will say it's the lack of information and standards, particularly for materials. Despite all the news reports and commentary, most engineers and operators in manufacturing have limited knowledge, let alone experience, of additive manufacturing processes or systems.…

We hear these words and fear these words at the same time—SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. From the standpoint of manufacturing, sustainable design conjures up visions of added expenses, the inability to compete relative to others in the same or similar industry, longer design times, delays in launching the product, greater product costs, etc. We also seem to feel that any product that addresses sustainable design methods will appeal to a much smaller segment of our society; i.e. “tree…

Happy are the graduates’ whom have completed their curriculum laid out before them. As a reward for their recent achievements, diplomas and certificates acknowledge graduates’ completion of their program. Congratulations!
Now that the fanfare…

Product development is never as easy as going from “What's the market solution” to “what's the engineering design” - there are many decisions in the middle that need to be made around the general design, tech requirements, and main components. (For example - - How’s the chassis going to come together, what’s the power supply, how is it going to communicate?)
You probably use Excel for this. At many companies, or on startup teams, you might even find yourselves sitting around in a…
