An interesting experiment on soil liquefaction

As you all my fellow engineers know, one of the most severe impacts of earthquakes is soil liquefaction. After having watched a program at NatGEO, I remembered I had this short video on a physical model that I recorded during an Engineering Fair in Tohoku, Japan, back in 2006. The small tubes in the model are manholes. Learn, enjoy while watching the experiment, and find out how harmful liquefaction can be. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which the strength and stiffness of a soil is reduced by…See More

Learning from experience: After the Great Event of March 11th

As engineers we are entitled to look at disasters from a technical perspective. This is relatively easy when the event is watched on the TV, but when the events are experienced at first hand, it is certainly more complicated. Today I run into an article that describes the experiences and learnings of a family living in Japan, who struggles to recover from the great seismic event that struck the east coast of Japan last March 11th. The article was published in July 5th 2011 on the online edition…See More

RoboCup: Towards the challenge of having a match humans vs robots by 2050

In a previous post I wrote a comment on the RoboCup broadcast I used to watch during the weekends of my grad studies on the Japanese television. At that time, the RoboCup was being held in Osaka (unfortunately, far from Sendai, where I was living). Now I am pleased to reannounce to all my fellow engineers that the RoboCup 2011 kicks off in Turkey in July!!!The RoboCup was held on its first version in Nagoya, Japan in 1996, and now at its 14th version still pursues the dream of challenging (and…See More

British roundabouts in the US: Opposed to the American psyque?

Jim Brainard is the Mayor of Carmel, Indiana, a city which according to himself, has more roundabouts than any other city in the US. Besides the aesthetical advantages and the saving of fuel claimed by Mayor Brainard, his revolution is supported quoting, among others, a study of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which suggests that the implementation of roudabouts in place of traffic intersections would mean an average decrease of 40% in all traffic accidents and a 90% drop in fatal…See More
