Hi everyone, I wanted to pose a question. How are System Engineers and System Integration Engineers viewed in the industry? I am currently debating on making a move from an RF Design Engineer in the SATCOM business to a System Integration Designer for a wireless device company. Is that downgrading? is it true that system integration people are thought of as glorified lab techs?

The software application used for engineering design often time is unique for a specific company. Each industry may have their preference based and cost, user interface and application capabilities. Given that your have the experience and flexibility to work with more than one application I believe you should be open to facilitate what is required to get a job while you are here.

I am looking for a job in wind energy. I have a manufacturing engineering degree, a business degree, and I have been trained in negotiations at Harvard Law School. I have a strong construction background and speak fluent Spanish. I will start at any position for almost any amount of money. Thanks for your advice! I've been freshening up on my interview skills lately and looking for what I and a potential employer want to accomplish during an interview. Your comments match well with what I've been reading/hearing from others.

All,
I'd just like to follow up with my earlier comments by saying that my persistence in bugging my manager, his manager and the hiring manager in HR for my group is starting to pay off. I now have an interview for a position very similar to what I am currently doing as an intern. Good old fashioned hard work and persistence can do wonders. :-) I will report back next week with how it goes and what I learn!

I'd be happy to provide some insight from my experience as a recruiter and manager. Here is some thoughts to start with...

PASSION: Whether I am interviewing people to join our recruiting team or interviewing / screening candidates for our clients, the importance of passion cannot be underestimated. And passion isn't something you can fake. So my first bit of advice is that before you even go in for the interview, figure out if this is something you truly want and can speak and communicate enthusiastically about. Interviewing with a company because you "need a job" or your "commute will be lessened" is not what an employer wants to hear. If you don't believe in the industry / product / service you're interviewing for, then find something else.

BE KNOWLEDEABLE: Especially during times like these, there are many people looking for jobs. Set yourself apart from them in any way you can. You might be submitting your resume to and interviewing with a number of companies but when you are interviewing with any one company in particular, make them feel like they are the only one! Don't give off the impression that you glanced over the job description five minutes before the interview. Immerse yourself in any information about the company that you possibly can. You can even reach out via LinkedIn or the Engineering Exchange to current employees of the company and ask for a few minutes of their time to speak or just pose a question in writing and see what you can gather (and incorporate this in the interview to show you did your homework). Going above and beyond what the many other applicants are doing during the interview process gives the employer insight into what type of motivated employee you will be.
