The Engineering Exchange

Developed by engineers for engineers.

HI,
I look for software for to make the 3D concepts in few minutes. The goal is to translate ideas of a brainstorming directly in meeting.

Aibre offers a special concurrent "team design" technology which allows a group of users to simultaneously design a sketch together. Would that help?

Hello Olivier,
Please can you details a little about what you really intent to do, because CATIA V5 and ProE are able to make a lot of things which you maybe don't use it in the past. For example, both are able to work with revers engineering concept...

Solid Edge ST is a good tool to make a concept part. Since it does not involve any feature tree or variable tables, but just dynamic modeling, it will surely help you to quickly create your part.

Google sketchup seems easy enough to use if you want something that's free.

Yes,

I do agree with the ability Solid Edge With Synchronous Technology, the way it has brought up the revolution in the CAD field full credit goes to SIEMENS PLM SOFTWARE, you can do lot of innovative thinks with this application without waisting much of ur energy andin fraction of time as compared to other CAD to mention Pro/e or CATIA or SW,
Those who r user or have explored / hand on will really apprieciate the change, if not explored explore it today...go to siemens plm software site for more info..

What you really need is pencil and paper if your criteria of a "few minutes" is key

Hi Olivier,
Actually CATIA is proposing a module exactly for what you are asking : Imagine & Shape...
You model without having to think about a spec tree or features, just by dragging surfaces and it allows to produce real aesthetic shape (G2 contyinuity surface), which you couldn't achieve with SolidEdge, or other software mentionned above.
Actually you model like a style designer with 3DStudioMax, but in the context of a mechanical design environment, your surface is ready to use for advanced engineering design, because it is natively in CATIA.
This techno have been introduced some years ago and is quite mature now, this is based on "subdivision surface".

Take a look at this video posted on YouTube (many others videos on the topic are on Youtube, but this one is really cool! )

You can find more information on Dassault Systemes website, Imagine & Shape is one module part of the CATIA for Design offer:

I use Solidworks for creating quick CAD models very easily. Depending on the complexity of your ideas it would take a few minutes to a few hours...also they have a huge database of CAD models that you can access which makes it nice.

The CATIA demo is Rhino or Maya type technology. Rhino will cost you a lot less, however the CATIA version looks a little easier to use and is mostly likely not NURBS based (i.e. the CAD is to engineering accuracy standards).

The CAD technology is "Direct Model Editing". You want the real and jaded story

Enjoy.

So we see CATIA's version (Workflow is pretty nice)

Here is Solidworks version: (Workflow is cumbersome)

Here is UG/NX's version (Workflow is between CATIA and SW):

From the blog link I posted you'll notice SpaceClaim set the recent bar. The article states Siemens (UG/NX and Solidedge) solutions have pushed the boundary and may be more useful for engineers due to its parametric capability. We'll after a little research I'm going to say not so fast....

SpaceClaim is pushing the boundary much further...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdkxqgbXaSI

and yes they have sudio parametric capabilities
http://www2.spaceclaim.com/forum/forums/p/341/846.aspx

And with that I think you have your best solution Oliver, at 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the others. FYI I'm a current expert Solidworks user (10+ years of experience), but I will say for concept modeling (working assembly) SpaceClaim has my attention!!!

I've just started using spaceclaim since my company became a reseller. Its good for quick and easy model manipulation, and great for FEA model simplification. The power search function is very helpful.

Google SketchUp and Solid Edge ST are good choices!
